PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Turkey: the next international diamond center?

Antwerp, December 14, 2009 - In late November, I had the privilege of addressing the 2nd Istanbul Gold Summit in Turkey after receiving an invitation from Osman Sarac, President of the Istanbul Gold and Diamond Exchange.

In my address, I emphasized that in addition to being one of the most important gold and jewelry centers in the world, Turkey has the potential of becoming one of the most important international diamond centers too. Turkey serves as a geographical bridge between Europe and the Middle East and one would hope that Turkey would seize this opportunity and employ this advantage to its benefit..

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

A Time For Diamonds

November 12, 2008: With the current economic downturn now a fact, consumers have been quick to reset their spending priorities and it is clear that luxury products are among the first items to be reconsidered on their shopping lists.  Still, global uncertainty or not, the holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas has always been the most important sales window for luxury items. So the question remains, how will savvy consumers decide what luxury presents to purchase for their loved ones?

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Taking the long term view

December 10, 2008: It is in people's nature to try and enjoy the world around them and many things our modern world has to offer, especially during vacations. Therefore, even when the economy tightens and there is less discretional spending on luxury, there is no doubt that during this holiday season too, men and women will continue to buy diamond jewelry for those they love and care for.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On the road to an industry-wide generic advertising effort

Upholding our standards – the IDC Rules

Antwerp, Belgium April 2, 2009 - Early last week, I received an announcement from the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) that the organization had amended its diamond definition. But as we later discovered, the media release was a mishap, which all went to prove the vital role played by the International Diamond Council on behalf of the WFDB and its sister organization IDMA.
